Jendral Soedirman Raden Soedirman (24 January 1916-29 January 1950) was a high-ranking Indonesian military officer during the Indonesian National Revolution. The first commander of the Indonesian National Armed Forces, he continues to be widely respected in the country. Soedirman also teached at Muhammadiyah. He taught his students on moralty using examples from the lives of the prophets and traditional wayang stories. One of his students later recalled that Sudirman was an even-handed and patient teacher who would mix humour and nationalism in his lessons; this made him popular with the students. He married Alfiah, a former schoolmate and the daughter of the rich batik merchant Raden Sastroatmojo, when he returned to Cilacap to teach at Muhammadiyah elemantary school.
